Presentation Regarding the Extension of Yosemite Street Over the O’Brian Canal Between E. 92nd Avenue and E. 93rd Place

Body

Summary & Background

Currently, Yosemite Street dead ends at E. 92nd Avenue and at E. 93rd Place on either side of the O’Brian Canal (see Project Map). Staff has been contacted by business owners located between E. 88th Avenue and E. 96th Avenue with concerns about needing an alternate route to travel between E. 88th Avenue and E. 96th Avenue when a Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) train blocks either crossing.

Staff has investigated the possibly of connecting Yosemite Street over the O’Brian Canal between E. 92nd Avenue and E. 93rd Place in order to provide a direct connection between E. 88th Avenue and E. 96th Avenue. As part of the Yosemite Street connection, signage can be installed along Yosemite, E. 88th Avenue, and E. 96th Avenue notifying traffic when a train is blocking either crossing so traffic can use Yosemite Street to go around the train.

An agreement with the Farmers Reservoir and Irrigation Company (FRICO) is needed for the Yosemite Street extension. Additional right-of-way would need to be acquired from land owned by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) on the west side of Yosemite Street and south of the O’Brian Canal. The City would also need to acquire a small triangle parcel of land located along the south side of the O’Brian Canal.
