Summary & Background
The City applied for and received a Safer Main Streets Grant from DRCOG in December of 2020. The City entered into an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in October of 2021 for the administration of the grant funding. The total estimated cost for the project is $3.4 million. The $3.4 million is being split 80% ($2.72 million) from DRCOG and 20% ($680,000) from the City. This grant program funds infrastructure projects that improve safety and accessibility along urban arterials, especially for vulnerable users who depend on a reliable urban street network such as pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, transit users, the elderly, and those with disabilities.

This project consists of roadway improvements to Colorado Boulevard from East 68th Avenue to East 70th Avenue for the purpose of providing bicycle and pedestrian connectivity through sidewalks and bicycle paths to the light rail station near Colorado Boulevard and East 70th Avenue. In addition, these improvements will provide an important pedestrian connection to the new Adams 14 elementary school located on East 68th Avenue. The anticipated outcome of this project is to improve efficiency and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists in the area.

The project scope includes design and construction of improvements to Colorado Boulevard from East 68th Avenue to East 70th Avenue including curb and gutter to the outside edge of the travel lanes. Multi-modal facilities will be provided through a six-foot wide concrete sidewalk on one side of the roadway and a bike path on the other side. Drainage improvements and street lighting will be included in the project.
