RESOLUTION REGARDING THE NAMING OF THE INCLUSIVE PLAY STRUCTURE AT VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

Body

Summary and Background Information

Upon recommendation from the Commerce City Parks, Recreation & Golf  (PRG) Advisory Committee, staff will share the proposed name for the inclusive play structure at Veterans Memorial Park.  The presentation reviews the facility naming policy (Council Policy #CP-7 adopted by on 9/15/14), the steps that have been taken to get the recommendation, and the recommended name.

Because this is the first inclusive play structure in Commerce City, staff wanted to give youth living in the area of Veterans Memorial Park an opportunity to participate in the naming of the play structure.  PRG staff worked with Adams County School District 14 (ACSD14) to encourage ACSD14 special education students to submit naming ideas for the new inclusive play structure at Veterans Memorial Park based on the theme of the area and schematic for the play structure.

An email was sent to students by ACSD14 staff and the naming contest was posted on ACSD14’s social media (Facebook); the following names were submitted to PRG staff (mid -June) by ACSD14 staff, these are the names submitted by students/families:

Eagles Nest, American Eagle, Dinosaur, Diversity Center, Enrichment Park, Friend Place, Fun Land, Happiness, HOPE, Joyful, Libres como el viento (Free as the wind), Magical, Pax Et Amor (Peace and Love), Playground Before Time, Rainbow, Rainbow Unicorn, Renewed Forces, Superhero, The Discovery Den, The Gathering, Together We Unite, United, We Are The Future.

On July 15th Commerce City youth camp participants had the opportunity to play on the Veterans Memorial Park play structure; PRG staff then presented the ACSD14 names above to the participants ages 5 through 10 years old following are the results:

Eagles Nest - 12 votes, Discovery Den - 10 votes, American Eagle - 8 votes, Fun Land - 8 votes, Magical Playground - 8 votes, Playground Before Time - 7 votes.

Eagles Nest was suggested by four (4) different ACSD14 students/families and Eagles Nest received the most votes from the Commerce City Youth Camp participants.  Based on the ACSD14 participants and Commerce City Youth Camp participant information, staff recommended that the PRG Advisory Committee support the name of Eagles Nest as the name of the Veteran’s Memorial play structure.

Information was presented to the PRG Advisory Committee members via email with the majority of the committee supporting the recommendation of the name of Eagles Nest for the inclusive play structure at Veterans Memorial Park to City Council.
