RESOLUTION DECLARING SUPPORT OF PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION FOR FRONTERRA PARK

Summary and Background Information:
The Commerce City Cultural Council is recommending City Council adopt Resolution 2019-79, which supports public art commissions for Fronterra Park, consistent with the city’s adopted public art master plan. Attached for reference is the project’s public art plan and selection process, background on the recommended artists, and the selection committee/cultural council meeting minutes.The City’s Public Art Master Plan is available online: http://www.c3gov.com/home/showdocument?id=738
Selection Process
The Art Selection Committee for Fronterra Park met three times from March 2019 to July 2019. At their meetings, they set the public art selection criteria, reviewed applications for art project with a total of 29 artist proposals submitted for consideration, selecting 4 semifinalists. On June 25, 2019 the semifinalists presented their site-specific proposals to the committee, and selected artist Lisa Russell.
Public Art Project Discription
Proposed are six large (9’) gabion structures (a metal cage filled with stone) with a falcon and bison in stainless steel welded to the sides. The falcon and bison are the mascots of the neighboring schools and the area was situated to finish the “outdoor classroom area.”
