Title

Crosswalk/Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon Policy

Body

Summary and Background Information:   The City is responsible for providing guidance for pedestrians on the proper places to cross streets and to help them to navigate our street system safely. We have many requests for new crosswalks, and rectangular rapid flashing beacons and we lack a concrete policy on when we should install such treatments.  The purpose of this discussion is to establish a policy that establishes a uniform set of guidelines to determine when and where crosswalk treatments should be installed. It considers when marked crosswalks, rectangular rapid flashing beacons and pedestrian hybrid beacons are appropriate engineering solutions.

When evaluating crosswalk treatments, the City follows guidelines from the Federal Highway Administration, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and Colorado Department of Transportation Roadway Design Guide while considering best practices. This policy outlines the standards the City is proposing to follow and when they should be applied.
