RESOLUTION DECLARING SUPPORT OF PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION FOR TOWER ROAD

Summary and Background Information:
The Commerce City Cultural Council is recommending City Council adopt Resolution 2019-13, which supports public art commissions for Tower Road, consistent with the city’s adopted public art master plan. Attached for reference is the project’s public art plan and selection process, background on the recommended artists, and the selection committee/cultural council meeting minutes.The City’s Public Art Master Plan is available online: http://www.c3gov.com/home/showdocument?id=738.
Selection Process
The Art Selection Committee for Tower Road met three times from May 2018 to January 2019. At their meetings, they set the public art selection criteria, reviewed applications for art project with a total of 49 artist proposals submitted for consideration, selecting 5 semifinalists. On January 26, 2019 the semifinalists presented their site-specific proposals to the committee, and selected artist Mark Horst.
Public Art Project Discription
The proposal selectied is of three colorful stylized leaves/grass sculptural installations based on native plants in the region. The three installations are based on a Milkweed Leaf, Grama Grass and a Cottonwood Leaf. They would be constructed of laser-cut steel or aluminum and painted with marine grade paint.
