Title
Sexual Assault Taskforce Creation and IGA
Body
Summary and Background Information: The Police Department is seeking Council approval of an IGA renewal with the City of Brighton for Victim Services and of an IGA with the City of Brighton to form a sexual assault task force. The Commerce City and Brighton Police Departments combined Victim Services Unit has proven to be extremely successful. The original IGA was initiated in 2014 and needed to be updated to reflect the current structures. In January of 2017, the City of Commerce City applied for a grant to form a sexual assault task force with the City of Brighton through the Bureau of Justice Smart Policing Initiative. Over 50 agencies applied for the grant and Commerce City was one of six agencies awarded the grant. The grant is for $699,721. City Council accepted this grant on November 6, 2017. The IGA will allow the City of Commerce City and the City of Brighton to form a multi-agency sexual assault task force that will implement best practice in the area of sexual assault investigation and sex offender management. The grant funding requires a significant research component to establish best practices and enhance service to victims.
