Summary and Background Information:
In 2003, city council approved Ordinance 1525, which specified an additional 30% fee to be charged on municipal court fines, provided the total fine and surcharge did not exceed the maximum fine authorized for the violation. As stated in the ordinance, the proceeds of the surcharge were to be used solely for community justice programs and victim/witness assistance programs as determined by the city manager.
The purpose of tonight’s study session is to discuss the current application of the ordinance - a follow-up from the state of the court presentation earlier this year - as well as other ideas for specific programs that align with the ordinance that could further advance reform efforts currently underway.
