Summary and Background InformationIn June 2014, Governor Hickenlooper signed a bill that allocated $2 million of the Marijuana Tax Cash Fund to the Tony Grampsas Youth Services Program (TGYS) for the prevention of youth marijuana use. Commerce City and was awarded $79,119. In 2015, Commerce City was asked to reapply for funds and was awarded another $79,119. The parks and recreation department and police department provide recreational and education prevention programs for the youth and teems of Commerce City. Through positive adult interaction and teaching personal safety and life skills, these programs reduce crime and violence. Services include structured safety classes, hands on activities, overnight camps, outdoor experiences, and youth- and teen-specific drop-in events. This program is structured after the National Police Activities League (PAL) and stresses the importance of positive adult role models and recreation services to reduce youth crime and violence.
