Title
Proclamation recognizing anniversary of 2013 Colorado flood
Body
Summary and Background Information:
The historic 2013 September flood was a $2.9 billion disaster for Colorado, resulting in nine lives lost, more than 1,800 homes destroyed, over 1,000 individuals evacuated by helicopter and 500 miles of roadway damaged. Commerce City received unprecedented rainfall during this 500-year event, overwhelming creekbeds and drainage systems. The subsequent flooding affected neighborhoods, parks, trails, roadways and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. During a 48-hour period, approximately 2,000 residents, businesses and animals were evacuated as a precautionary measure, while numerous agencies and organizations collaborated to address the immediate impacts of the disaster. Thankfully, Commerce City did not experience loss of life, structure loss or significant property damage within its boundaries.
Well after the waters receded, local, state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations remained to provide resources to residents in need. From the Federal Emergency Management Administration to the State of Colorado, Adams County and nonprofits such as Colorado Spirit, assistance is still available to those affected by the flood. The state created Colorado United, www.coloradounited.com, to serve as an information clearinghouse for programs and resources to those in need, donation and volunteer opportunities, as well as tips for natural disaster preparedness. The proclamation honors all those who assisted during and after the flood, as well as encourages residents to use available programs and information.
