Summary and Background Information:
96th Avenue was identified within the City of Commerce City’s 2010 Transportation Master Plan as a recommended candidate for highway widening to provide capacity improvements. 96th Avenue is classified as a minor arterial throughout the study area and was subsequently planned to be a four-lane roadway with a landscaped median. The two westbound lanes were constructed in 2013 from Chambers Road to Tower Road. On August 15, 2022, City Council approved a resolution awarding a contract for design and preconstruction services for the 96th Avenue Widening Project. Staff worked with the design contractor on the design of the project until July of 2024. On October 21, 2024, City Council approved a resolution authorizing the City Manager to negotiate and award a contract to construct the improvements for the East 96th Avenue Widening, Chambers Road to Tower Road Project.
The Project will construct the planned landscaped median and the two eastbound lanes. The construction will include: (1) street lighting, (2) storm sewer infrastructure, (3) drainage improvements, (4) traffic signals at Chambers Road, Landmark Drive, Reunion Parkway/Telluride Street, and modifications to the Tower Road traffic signal, (5) landscaped medians, (6) irrigation, and (7) installation of pull boxes and conduits for a future City fiber optic backbone that will connect all of the City’s traffic signals and cameras to the City’s traffic command center.
