Title
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE 2025 BUDGET OF THE CITY OF COMMERCE CITY, COLORADO BY THE RECOGNITION OF THE EDWARD BYRNE MEMORIAL JUSTICE ASSISTANCE GRANT (JAG) PROGRAM GRANT FUNDS IN THE AMOUNT OF $28,395 AND THE AUTHORIZATION OF THE EXPENDITURE THEREOF
Body
Summary & Background
The Commerce City Police Department (“CCPD”) received Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (“JAG”) 2024 formula funds from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance for $28,395. These funds will be used to expand the City of Commerce City’s (“City”) gunshot detection system and to purchase an additional level III ballistic shield.
With this funding, the gunshot detection system will be expanded a quarter mile to a triangle shaped area in the City that experiences high levels of gun fire activity. The additional coverage would extend from 72nd Street to the north, 66th Street to the south, Highway 2 to the east and Highway 85 to the west. This area is currently not included in the City’s gunshot detection system but would significantly benefit from inclusion as expanding the system will greatly assist CCPD in responding to gun violence faster and more effectively, gathering more accurate data, being alerted even when there is no emergency services call, and enhancing investigations.
CCPD will use the remaining funds to purchase a level III ballistic shield. Ballistic shields are critical to protecting officers from bullets, thrown objects and other threats.
