Recommended City Council Action:

Council members are encouraged to ask clarifying questions. No additional action is

recommended.

Summary Statement:

Since late 2011 it was as discovered that benzene has been leaking into the Sand

Creek originating from the Suncor refinery. Suncor Energy officials have been

proactive and forthcoming with information about their efforts to stop the flow into the

creek, find the source, and stop the leak.

Council members have requested an additional briefing from the Colorado

Department of Public Health and the Environment (CDPHE) to better understand the

issue and also the State's perspective on it.

Next Steps: Council would have to identify if they would like additional information.

Policy Issue: Should City Council be well informed and perhaps active on

environmental issues that are of state wide concerns but also impact the lives of

residents and businesses within their jurisdiction.
