Safety Action Plan Update

Body

Summary and Background Information

Commerce City received funding through the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program to develop a comprehensive Safety Action Plan. Funding is for the planning process but does include project implementation funds. Staff will apply for additional SS4A funds once the plan has been adopted by City Council in 2025 and a new call for projects is posted by the FHWA.

A Safety Action Plan (SAP) is a comprehensive safety plan aimed at reducing and eliminating serious-injury and fatal crashes affecting all roadway users. SAPs use data analysis to characterize roadway safety problems and strengthen a community’s approach through projects and strategies that address the most significant safety risks. In addition, SAPs can be considered a part of a Vision Zero strategy. Commerce City’s SAP will 1) Focus on current concerns and needs for transportation safety for walking, biking, driving and transit users; 2) evaluate current safety concerns and “hot spots” where a large quantity or the most severe crashes occur; 3) identify safety improvements to address crash concerns.

The purpose of this presentation is to provide Council with a summary of the work done to date on the project. Future action for the SAP will include a draft overview with City Council, formal adoption by City Council, and adoption of a resolution by City Council that indicates Council’s commitment to reducing fatalities and significant injuries on the City’s transportation network.
