Body

Summary and Background Information

The Defense Counsel First Appearance Grant Program is to reimburse local governments, in part of full, for costs associated with the provision of defense counsel to  defendants at their first appearances in municipal court.

Previously an ordinance approved the first round of funding at $10,000; however per court staff those funds were not expended prior to the deadline.  Due to the pandemic, very few parties were being arrested and held in detention facilities on qualified municipal charges. Staff will continue to log cases that qualify and use this new award for those expenditures.
