Title
AN ORDINANCE REPEALING AND REENACTING SECTION 5-4500 OF THE COMMERCE CITY REVISED MUNICIPAL CODE TO ADOPT THE 2020 NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE, AND AMENDING THE CITY’S PREVIOUSLY ADOPTED RESIDENTIAL CODE TO INCORPORATE APPLICABLE STANDARDS OF THE 2020 NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE
Body
Summary and Background Information:
The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) dictates the edition of the electrical code localities are required to adopt. DORA adopted the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) and gave localities until August 1, 2020 to follow suit. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a one-year postponement was permitted.
This code amendment aligns the Commerce City Building Code with the DORA requirements. For commercial construction, this is a "like-for-like" reference from the 2017 edition to the 2020 edition of the NEC. For residential construction, the code change entails deleting all electrical provisions from the 2018 International Residential Code (which are a reprint of the 2017 NEC residential provisions) and a reference to the 2020 NEC instead.
