If I Were Mayor Awards
Body
Summary and Background Information:
If I were Mayor is an essay contest coordinated by the Colorado Municipal League (CML). This year, Commerce City ran the essay contest at the local level simultaneously to select a Mayor for the day from the city's community.
The city received 288 essays from 7th and 8th graders from Adams City Middle School and Kearney Middle School. The Commerce City Youth Commission read and scored the 288 essays, narrowing them down to the top 50. Mayor Pro Tem Rene Bullock and Councilwoman Jadie Carson, along with Larry Quintana and Mary Morton from the Adams 14 Board of Education, with Youth Commission Volunteer Coordinator Paolo Diaz scored the top 50 down to the top 10, selecting the top 5 and the Mayor for the day.
All 50 top students and their families were invited to attend the reception beforehand (5:30 p.m. in the lobby). The top five are asked to read their essays to council and are presented with a plaque. The top winner is asked to be "Mayor for the Day" and sit next to the mayor at the dias.
