Title
City Mission and Vision Updates
Body
Summary and Background Information
The City Council held its annual retreat in February 2023 to begin developing a multi-year strategic plan. As part of the strategic planning process, Council reviewed and expressed interest in changing the City’s Mission and Vision statements. This presentation will review the current City Mission and Vision statements, where Council’s last discussion of the Mission and Vision left off, and what steps can be taken next.
Current City Mission and Vision
The current City Mission and Vision statements were created in 2014-2015, with minor revisions in 2017. The current City Mission statement is:
As a municipality, we provide excellent public services and customer experiences by anticipating needs, embracing diversity, and fostering relationships to sustain a growing and vibrant community.
The current City Vision statement is:
To be a Quality Community for a Lifetime through the relentless pursuit of excellence.
Proposed Updates
Based on Council’s discussion at the Winter Retreat and the follow-up meeting on March 10th, 2023, staff has provided an initial update for Council to respond and change.
The proposed updated City Mission statement is:
Commerce City provides excellent services to its diverse community to build a Quality Community for a Lifetime
The proposed updated City Vision statement is:
Commerce City is a thriving community: economically strong, environmentally sustainable, diverse, inclusive, and socially equitable and responsive.
Based on the discussion, Council also wants a way to reflect the values that undergird the City’s Mission and Vision. Staff recommends adopting Value Statements. The proposed Value Statements are:
Commerce City values…
- a diverse community by celebrating its unique history, identity, and culture, where families and individuals of all ages can live, work, and play; and,
- a healthy and safe community where fresh air, clean water, public health, and preservation of natural open spaces are paramount; and,
- a financially sound community and economy where businesses flourish through collaboration and innovation.
Next Steps
Traditionally, there is no formal process nor any legal obligation to formally adopt a Mission and Vision via resolution, Council has signed off on these statements within a public meeting setting. If Council so chooses, they may approve of the Mission and Vision statements as amended at this meeting which will allow staff to begin updating City documents, websites, stationery, and collateral documents.
Council may elect to bring this forward for approval through a motion at a regular meeting.
Staff Responsible (Department Head): Jason Rogers, City Manager
Staff Member Presenting: Armando Guardiola, Chief Innovation Officer
Staff Recommendation: Provide feedback and input on updated Mission and Vision statements and provide direction as to the next steps Council would like to take.
