Title

Approval of Speed Radar Signs Locations and Funding

Body

The purpose of this administrative item is to approve the locations of the speed radars and to allocate additional funding for purchase and installation of the radar signs.

Summary & Background

At the City Council’s request, staff researched the purchase price for radar signs and developed a list of recommended locations for installations and use. Three quotes for radar signs were obtained from the following companies:

                     RU2                                          $85,750

                     Carmanah                     $76,000

                     Radar Sign                     $57,000

All quotes are for 10 unites, including $1,500/each for installation. All three products include the “SLOW DOWN” sign display. The “RED/BLUE” flashers are only included with the Radar Sign and RU2 product lines. See attached examples of radar signs options and proposed locations.

Staff Responsible (Department Head): Joe Wilson, Director of Public Works

Staff Presenting: Brent Soderlin, City Engineer

Financial Impact: If City Council chooses the Radar Sign option, the financial impact will be $57,000.  The financial impact to staff will be minimal, as we have a Project Manager on staff to manage/oversee the contract to install the speed radar signs.

Funding Source: The specific funding source has not been identified within the existing budget.  Public Works can accommodate the cost within the Evaluation of Core City Signals Program budget, but this may limit the department from continuing the signal evaluation program for signals north of 72nd Avenue.  It is requested the City Council authorize additional funds for the purchase and installation of the speed radar signs or appropriate funds to replace funds used by the department for the purchase.

Staff Recommendation: Approve use of the Radar Sign product line based upon the price point and inclusion of the “SLOW DOWN” display and “RED/BLUE” flashers.

Suggested Motion: I move that the City Council concur with staff’s recommendation of the Radar Sign product line as well as installation locations, subject to the identification of funds.
