Title

Proposal for Installation of Speed Bumps to Improve Traffic Calming

Body

Summary and Background InformationIn recent months, there has been a significant increase in speeding and reckless driving along certain routes within the city, particularly in areas lacking speed bumps. This issue not only poses a threat to public safety but also disrupts the quality of life for residents who experience excessive noise, hazardous driving, and heightened risks for accidents. To address these concerns, we propose the installation of speed bumps along key routes to promote traffic calming and enhance road safety.

Problem Statement:

Several routes within the city have become hotspots for speeding, as drivers take advantage of long stretches without traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps. This has led to an increase in unsafe driving behaviors, including speeding, tailgating, and erratic lane changes. These routes have become a nuisance for residents, with frequent complaints of noise pollution, danger to pedestrians, and heightened risks of collisions.

Objective:

The primary objective of this proposal is to install speed bumps along selected routes to:

• Reduce vehicle speeds.

• Enhance the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

• Improve the quality of life for residents by minimizing noise and disruption caused by speeding vehicles.

• Encourage safer driving habits within residential and high-traffic areas.

Proposed Locations:

The following routes are suggested for speed bump installation based on resident complaints, traffic data, and accident reports:

1. (Speed Bumps) Olive Street from 60th Ave South to 58th Ave.

2. (Speed Bumps) Oneida Street from 60th Ave., South to 58th Ave.

3. Also include speed bumps needed from 60th to 58th with Southbound Street and Northbound north that run along Newport Street and Magnolia Street.

Benefits of Speed Bumps:

 • Speed Reduction: Speed bumps are proven to reduce vehicle speeds, particularly in residential areas and areas with high pedestrian activity.

• Safety Improvement: By forcing vehicles to slow down, speed bumps can help reduce the likelihood and severity of accidents.

• Noise Reduction: Controlling vehicle speeds leads to less tire noise, engine revving, and abrupt braking, contributing to a quieter and more peaceful neighborhood.

• Community Satisfaction: Speed bumps directly address the concerns of residents who have expressed frustration with speeding and dangerous driving in their communities.

Conclusion:

Installing speed bumps along certain routes within the city is a cost-effective and proven solution to mitigate speeding and improve road safety. This proposal not only addresses the concerns of residents but also fosters a safer and more livable community. I also would like to recommend prioritizing this initiative and moving forward with the necessary assessments and approvals for implementation.
