Summary and Background Information

The Parks, Recreation and Golf (PRG) Department, since 2015, has partnered with multiple entities (Friends of the  Front Range Wildlife Refuges, City of Aurora, Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership, United States Fish and Wildlife Service-Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, State of Colorado-Department of Natural Resources, Bluff Lake Nature Center, Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, Environmental Learning for Kids, Groundwork Denver, Mile High Youth Corps, and The Urban Farm) to provide opportunities to area youth to connect and engage with the outdoors.

The Generation Wild Northeast Metro Coalition (NEMC) has received multiple grants through Great Outdoors Colorado for implementation to improve youth and family connections with the outdoors in underserved communities.

2016: $100,000

2017-2019: $1,845,918

2021-2025: $1,991,889

NEMC received an additional grant award for $371,000 for two years of programming during 2024 and 2025. The City of Commerce City serves as the sponsoring agency for this grant award. Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuge is the fiscal agent, whom the City sponsors, and receives funding directly from GOCO to distribute funds to partners.

City Council approved Resolution 2024-084 on July 15, 2024 to enter into the grant agreement for fiscal year 2024 in which NEMC received $82,000 of the $371,000 ($3,500 of this is being passed through to Commerce City). This resolution is to approve an addendum to the agreement to accept the remaining $253,000 for fiscal year 2025 ($3,500 of this is being passed through to Commerce City). The two Commerce City portions of $3,500 each, for a total of $7,000, is included in the budget appropriation detailed by Ordinance 2645.

Below breaks down how the total two-year award amount of $371,000 was split amongst grant partners:

$335,000 - Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges

$36,000 - City of Aurora*

Of the $335,000 distributed to Friends of the Front Range Wildlife Refuges, $7,000 will be passed through to the City of Commerce City Parks, Recreation and Golf Department.

*The City of Aurora receives their portion of the grant directly from GOCO.
