Recognition of Commerce City's Nominees for Adams County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Awards
Body
Summary and Background Information:  The Adams County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Awards (ACMCYA) is a program that recognizes teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19 who have overcome personal adversity to create positive change in their lives.  The award program provides business, community, and civic leaders an opportunity to actively demonstrate their belief in, and support for, the young people in our communities.
Award recipients are determined through a nomination and selection process.  All nominees are recognized at the local level by individual jurisdictions.  A selection committee comprised of representatives from the county and local jurisdictions screens all nominations and selects 20 nominees to be recognized at a county-wide celebration in the spring each year.
Locally, all Commerce City nominees were recognized at a banquet on March 18th, from 6-8pm at Buffalo Run.  Information about each nominee, along with recognition of those selected as finalists will be read at a council meeting.  Since the city hosted the banquet on March 18th, the nominees will not be required to attend the council meeting (they will not be receiving certificates at the meeting, as they have in years past.)  Finalists will be recognized at the county-wide celebration at Riverdale Golf Course on April 30th.

Micayla Bellamy
Eighteen year old Micayla Bellamy is a senior at Adams City High School. Micayla is second in line for valedictorian and a candidate to attend Yale University in the fall. These successes, however, did not come easily for Micayla. Throughout her young life, Micayla has moved households many times and has been faced with challenges that would have made it easy and understandable for her to give up, but she did not do that. Instead of giving up, Micayla did the opposite, realizing that the only way to better her life was to make the most of her education and attend college. With that being said, Micayla buried her head in books and sought out school counselors and teachers at every opportunity to talk with them about her future. She is truly taking her future into her own hands and not letting anything stand in the way.
On top of her school work, Micayla has volunteered over 380 hours at the senior center through Volunteers of America, as well as Adams 14 and Clear Creek School Districts. When asked why she volunteers, she simply stated because she cares about people.
It is our honor and privilege to present Micayla Bellamy with the Adams County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award.  In addition, Micayla was selected to be recognized at the county level on April 30th.  There were over 70 nominees this year in Adams County, with just 23 advancing to the county level.  Congratulations, Micayla, for your outstanding accomplishments!
Sophia Sunday
Sophia is a 7th grader at Landmark Academy. Challenges are nothing new to Sophia. She has been faced with health challenges, as well as academic struggles over the years, but you wouldn't know it if you spent time with Sophia. Her positive attitude and smile brighten whatever room she is in. She inspires others to be better versions of themselves by constantly putting forth her best effort and being true to herself. Despite encountering many obstacles that others don't have to face, Sophia participates in extracurricular activities and sports. Both teachers and peers alike derive motivation and inspiration from this amazing girl. We are proud to present the Adams County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award to Sophia Sunday.
